[ARCHIVED] Safety Precautions Walking at Night

night walking

Deer Park Resident and former Trustee Alan Czarnik wants to remind residents walking at night to take safety precautions.

"Living in Deer Park offers peaceful neighborhoods, privacy, quiet streets, along with opportunities for bike riding and long walks, many times with your dog. With so many homes having a dog or two these days, it is tough to think of a day when you don't drive by people enjoying a walk with their beloved dog. This is a great benefit for the animal as well as an opportunity to get your steps in, a real win-win. That said, walking at night down dark roads has it risks. Cars coming down the road cannot see you until the last minute, which is extremely unnerving as you swerve at the last minute to avoid the pedestrian. With the warmer weather coming walking traffic will increase. Warmer weather will also bring out new drivers and driver trainees. All great summer time activities as long as you take safety precautions.

  • Wear reflective gear
  • Carry a flash light
  • Keep an eye on approaching cars
  • Walk against traffic, so you can see automobiles approaching
  • Bring a friend to help ward off predators like coyotes, fox
  • Leave your head phones and distractions at home

While evening walks, especially with your four-legged friend can be a lot of fun and something you look forward to at the end of the day. It is important to stay alert and safety conscious. Staying visible to others and aware of your surroundings will go a long way to ensure your night walks will remain enjoyable. Being prepared to handle any potential trouble that approaches yourself or your dog can actually make you more confident and relaxed."
