Ela Prairie Update
Cuba Marsh’s Ela Prairie is on the east side of Ela Rd. It is a rich habitat that features prairie and wetland areas. Earlier this winter, volunteers and a District-supervised contractor completed invasive woody species removal along the preserve’s southern border. A second contractor is clearing invasives along the preserve’s northern border—across from Deer Park’s Village Hall on Cuba Rd.—this winter. The work will be completed this summer. Volunteers are in the process of sowing seeds in recently cleared areas to reintroduce native prairie plants and create new, diverse habitat for birds, insects, and wildlife. Each year, you will be able to watch the beauty of the wildflowers spread as the new prairie and wetland communities take hold.
