Sheriff Mark Curran reminds members of the community to lock your cars and keep spare keys/fobs indoors. This summer, regional law enforcement has seen an increase in vehicle burglaries and vehicle thefts throughout Lake County.
Car burglars target unlocked cars parked in residential driveways during the overnight hours. Generally, burglars go driveway to driveway, checking door handles to see if they can enter unlocked cars. Once inside, they steal anything of value. They also use the garage door opener to enter the garage or residence. Over 90% of the cars burglarized this summer could have been prevented by locking doors.
Car thieves enter unlocked cars seeking a spare key/fob inside. If the spare key/fob remains in the vehicle, the thief starts the vehicle, and off they go.
95% of cars stolen in Lake County this summer had spare keys left inside.
